Recently I designed a digital still life illustration using solid shapes. While playing around with the composition I realized that there were endless compositions that could be created with this handful of basic shapes. This gave me the idea to create a DIY modern/boho art kit as a free SVG design for use with your Cricut cutting machine.
Using the DIY Modern Art with Cricut SVG Kit
Simply download the twenty-two shapes (or multiples of these shapes) from the Gilded Stork Template Library, upload to design space, and cut out on your Cricut machine using a handful of cardstocks in a cohesive color scheme…and play!
I used a variety of cardstocks from both Michaels Craft Store (Having so much fun with the Recollections rose gold foil cardstock lately!) and from Above Ground Art Supplies (local to Toronto).
If you don’t already have a login password for the template library, enter your email below to get the login details sent to your inbox.
Adhering the Cricut Cut Shapes
I used double-sided tape to prevent the paper from buckling, however, a glue stick would also do the trick. You will just want to avoid using white glue.
Tips for Designing a Gallery Wall with your Cricut Art
At the bottom of this post are nine modern art ideas to get you started. I’ve made this into a PDF included with the SVG files so that you can have it on hand while crafting.
Gallery walls typically look best with an odd number of art/frames, so aim to create three or five pieces.
If you’d like to get creative and play with composition, consider using principles of design to create pieces that are pleasing to the eye.
Design principles include balance, unity, contrast, emphasis, repetition, pattern, rhythm, movement, proportion, variety, & harmony.
Using the DIY Modern Art Kit with Children
This would also be a fun activity to do with kids, they can easily glue the shapes down and create some art that you will be proud to hang!
Consider using this kit to show your children examples of a few design principles to make it an educational activity.
